stock display
the stock display is a peripheral display
that projects NASDAQ stock prices into everyday environments. the insidiousness of this project comes
from its seeming mundaness -- the integration of such consumerist-centered information into the
fabric of everyday infrastructure turns what should be a remarked-upon, debated entity into
something assumed and easily habituated. the display is not much different from standard
advertising in this way, except that it has the backing of a pseudo-scientific community (hci)
as well as institutional support. usually, when studied in an academic environment, advertising effects
on the human psyche are explored without bias -- ultimately the intent is to understand how
the human brain adapts to different stimuli. in this case, though, academic and industrial communities
have established a presumption of positive impact a priori. that is, studies of such
displays are meant only to verify that these displays are good, contribute to Progress and thus,
and most importantly, can be used to generate revenue.
in response to this appalling technology, we present stock display. stock display
does not obfuscate its goals, instead directly telling the viewer exactly which product to think about at
any given moment. stock display then provides viewers an interface to make purchases of stock. if
users do not make purchases, stock display becomes increasingly angrier, first admonishing
users and finally launching DoS attacks upon machines on the network to which it is attached.
